May Birthstone Emerald & The tribe of Levi

Did you know birthstones have their origins in the bible?

Scholars trace the origin of birthstones back to the Breastplate of Aaron, as described in the Book of Exodus in the Bible. The Breastplate boasted 12 unique gemstones that represented the 12 tribes of Israel. It was a religious garment with specific symbolism regarding the tribes. The tribe of Levi, was associated with the stone emerald. The stone representing the tribe of priests is referred to as "bareḳet" in Hebrew, which is often translated as "emerald" or "chalcedony."

Emeralds are famous for it's unmistakable deep green color, and the color green is often associated with themes of growth, vitality, and prosperity. In the Bible, the color green symbolizes life, renewal, and abundance.

"The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing." - Psalm 92:12-14

This imagery of flourishing and abundance can be associated with the symbolism of the emerald stone, which represents growth and vitality. As the tribe of Levi was set apart for special service to God as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle, the emerald reflects the spiritual growth and flourishing of the tribe in their sacred duties.

Additionally, the color green is associated with God's provision and sustenance.

"He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake." - Psalm 23:2-3

This imagery symbolizes God's care and provision for His people, whatever sacred call God has for you, he will provide a way, just like he did for the Levi's. God provided for the tribe by commanding the other tribes to support them with tithes and offerings, by providing cities and pasturelands for them to dwell in, and by giving them a spiritual inheritance. In Deuteronomy 18:1-2, God declared that the Levites would have no portion or inheritance with Israel, but that they would receive the offerings and sacrifices made to the Lord as their inheritance. This spiritual inheritance was a special blessing from God, as it allowed the Levites to dedicate themselves fully to serving God and His people.

What sacred calling is God wanting you to serve in? It doesn't have to be some mission impossible. Look around you, and seek ways to fully serve God where you are now.

Wear emeralds as a reminder and/or a prophetic declaration of the calling God has on your life as well as His faithful providence. May our sovereign God of providence bless you with a spiritual inheritance of a priestly calling.
