This antique coin replica of the Venetian ducat, now in the British Museum, was minted between 1523-1538. The origin of the name ‘ducat’ derives from the word for ‘duke’ in Latin. The simulacrum visibly evidences its etymological origin as this ducat bears both the name and image of Andrea Gritti, the Doge or Duke of Venice, who issued it. The stamp on the face of the coin depicts Christ amidst a field of stars, encircled by Latin text meaning, ‘Christ, let this duchy, ruled by your rule, be dedicated to you’. Thus, in its compact form, the artefact provides us with an abundant vista into the world of the Venetian Republic, where the triumvirate powers of spiritual, political, and mercantile values inextricably alloy together.
