July's Birthstone Ruby and the Tribe of Reuben

July 16 2022 – Yuna R

Did you know birthstones have their origins in the bible?

Scholars trace the origin of birthstones back to the Breastplate of Aaron, as described in the Book of Exodus in the Bible. The Breastplate boasted 12 unique gemstones that represented the 12 tribes of Israel. It was a religious garment with specific symbolism regarding the tribes. To highlight the special attributes of each tribe, the gems were set in four rows of three.

July's birthstone is the ruby, representing the Tribe of Reuben. Reuben is the firstborn of Jacob. Genesis 35:22 briefly described Reuben laying with Bilhah, his stepmother's maid and father's concubine. This act ultimately caused him to lose his Firstborn status and his tribe to loose their status as well. In Genesis chapter 49, Jacob says these final words to his son:

"Reuben, you are my first-born, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity and the excellency of power. Unstable as water, you shall not excel, because you went up to your father's bed; then you defiled it. He went up to my couch."

However, Reuben repents and in Genesis 37 he saves his brother's life in the plot against Joseph.

The red stone is representative of Reuben's feeling of shame when acknowledging his transgression. Seemingly, the stone would appear to have a negative connotation, however it’s actually positive, as it serves as a reminder to compel one to repent fully like Reuben. It is a constant reminder that all humans have the ability to change for the good.

In other parts of the bible, the ruby is compared to the value of wisdom (Job 28:18;Proverbs 3:15;8:11). The price of a virtuous woman is said to be "far above rubies" (Proverbs 31:10).  It is no wonder that the popular gemstone has long been regarded for it's properties in wisdom, strength and power.

A ruby’s hardness is second only to that of diamonds. This trait, and their innate durability make this stone perfect for everyday wear. Check out our ruby jewellery or birthstone collection

Are you a July baby? Does this sound like you? Weather your birthstone description matches you are not, it is a reminder that God has created every human uniquely and for a purpose. It is also a reminder that we are created for community. We are meant to function within a tribe that has a divine purpose. Ask the Holy Spirit today to show you what unique qualities God put in you and what tribe you belong to.

May God bless you with strength and wisdom this month.
